LANL Institute for Advanced Studies
The Institute for Advanced Studies is one of the five academically-lead institutes within Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). It is a partnership between LANL and the three New Mexico universities (University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, and New Mexico Tech). The New Mexico universities combined to form the New Mexico Consortium (NMC), which acts as the interface between the Universities and LANL and operates the IAS. It was formed in 2006 by a Teaming Agreement between the three New Mexico universities and Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS, LLC).
The IAS combines the strengths New Mexico's research universities with the unique capabilities of LANL to promote research and educational opportunities. The IAS supports:
- strategic collaborations among the members of the NMC, LANL, the University of California (UC), other research and educational institutions, and other National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratories,
- educational programs for students and staff that enhance recruitment, retention, and revitalization, and
- partnerships for new collaborative research efforts and enhanced infrastructure.
The IAS funds activities that support these objectives. We make a priority of supporting our focus areas:
- Information Science and Technology
- Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Fundamental Physics
- Radiochemistry and Nuclear Science
- Energy and Environment
We also consider strategic investments in new areas. For more information, see our call for proposals
