ACCent: Cosmic Web Workshop

— filed under:

This workshop was held in Socorro in May, 2008. This meeting focused on galaxy formation in the context of large-scale distribution of matter in the Universe, the main topics being: galaxy formation and evolution, neutral hydrogen and reheating, the dynamics of large-scale structure, and large cosmological simulations.

Anatoly Klypin (New Mexico State University) was the main organizer. The Local Organizing Committee consisted of Chris Carilli of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), Steve Myers (NRAO), and Lisa Young of New Mexico Tech (NMT). Members of the Scientific Organizing Committee were Klypin, Salman Habib of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Steve Myers (NRAO), and Greg Taylor of the University of New Mexico UNM). External participants included Jack Burns (Colorado), Neal Dalal (Toronto), Nick Gnedin (Fermilab), Fabio Governato (Washington), Jason Prochaska (UC Santa Cruz), Ravi Sheth (University of Pennsylvania), and Risa Wechsler (Stanford University). Local participants included 10 people from LANL, three from NRAO/NMT, five from NMSU, and three from UNM.

The main topics of discussion were galaxy formation and the large-scale structure of the Universe. The following subjects were discussed in detail:

  • Formation of galaxies in the expanding Universe: models, simulations, physics
  • Early stages of galaxy evolution: gas around galaxies, absorption lines, infall and outflow of gas.
  • Neutral hydrogen and reheating, Ly-a forest
  • Large-scale structure: non-linear and quasi-linear effects. Baryonic oscillations.
  • Large cosmological simulations: constraints on cosmological parameters.

The conference participants presented their results and engaged in discussions of recent developments in the field. Galaxy formation is a dynamical field of astronomy, and it changes very quickly. The conference was important for scientists in New Mexico because it provided reviews of most up-to-date topics and allowed detailed discussions.

The picture represents a simulation of the distribution of dark matter on large scales, which illustrates the notion of the cosmic web.
