Call for Proposals

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Institute for Advanced Studies funds proposal development, conferences and workshops, summer schools, internships, teaching sabbaticals and visiting faculty, curriculum development and distance education.

We make a priority of funding programs in our thrust areas:

We strongly recommend that you follow the links for these thrust areas and contact the thrust area leaders with your proposal prior to submission.

We will also consider strategic investments in new areas. We do not currently directly fund research

The Institute for Advanced Studies promotes research and education that strengthens the partnership among the New Mexico universities and LANL. In evaluating proposals, we look for the following elements that support this objective:

  • Collaboration between LANL and the New Mexico universities.
  • Support for partner institutions to seek new funding opportunities.
  • Economic development in New Mexico.
  • Educational opportunities for New Mexico students.
  • Recruitment, retention, and professional development to attract and keep the best scientists and engineers in New Mexico.
  • Strategic connections with the national and international scientific community in our thrust areas.
  • Connection to our thrust areas.

Winning proposals typically do not touch all these areas, but the larger the funding request, the more compelling the argument needs to be in terms of these IAS priorities. Cross-institutional collaboration is more highly weighted than other priorities. A typical award is $20K-$50K. Awards above $100K are unusual, smaller requests are welcome. While awards may benefit individuals who are not from partner institutions, the proposal must originate from individuals associated with our partner institutions: LANL, the University of New Mexico (UNM), New Mexico Tech (NMT) and New Mexico State University (NMSU).

While we fund many types of activities, we have two models for programs:

University Faculty Proposal Development Grant

We grant awards to university faculty to pay up to one month of summer support for collaboration with LANL staff that will result in a proposal to an outside funder. These collaborations should be aligned with IAS thrust areas. This grant is not available to LANL staff.

Award size: up to $15K

IAS Summer Student Positions

We grant awards to university faculty to support a summer student from a New Mexico university to support collaborative activity with LANL staff. The grant will be administered within one of the existing summer programs within LANL in order to ensure that the position meets the educational objectives of this award. This work should support the objectives of one of the IAS thrust areas. The strongest proposal will result in collaborative proposals to outside agencies.

Award size: up to $10K
