10th Annual Meeting of SQuInT
(Santa Fe, from
Feb 14, 2008 11:00 AM to
Feb 17, 2008 11:00 AM)
-
The progress in modern information technology implies that transistors and other circuit
elements will operate in the single-electron limit within a decade or two, and will reach atomic dimensions a few decades after that. At some point along this path, technology will cross the quantum/classical boundary and enter a whole new world of quantum mechanical information processing based on coherent quantum dynamics. Quantum information science has already forced a reevaluation of the traditional notions of computational complexity, by showing that the underlying model of computation cannot ignore the ultimately quantum mechanical nature of information encoding and processing. This impacts not only the foundations of theoretical computer science, but also opens avenues for computing power far beyond the fastest classical devices. Many physical implementations of quantum information have been explored, and a few are now at a point where a fault tolerant quantum processor architecture can be envisioned. More broadly, devices whose components are manifestly quantum can perform tasks that are impossible within the framework of classical physics, such as secure communication, teleportation, and metrology beyond the standard quantum limit.

Biological Threat Non-proliferation Conference
(La Fonda Hotel, Santa Fe, from
Dec 04, 2007 08:10 AM to
Dec 05, 2007 10:10 AM)
-
The concern about the potential use of biological weapons (BW) is at an all-time high, because of the demonstrated use, the present asymmetrical national security environment, and the unprecedented rapid development of biotechnology that provides potentially new threats from genetically modified organisms. Despite the existing system of agreements and organizations developed to control the development, use, and proliferation of biological weapons, the number of states with suspected biological weapons programs is increasing. In addition to the state programs, biological threats can also come from international terrorism groups or even individuals, adding a new dimension to the complexity of bioweapons control. The nature of the current threats and the rationale for a biological attack are difficult to predict. A comprehensive approach to biological weapons control remains to be formulated and accomplished.

Nuclear Particle, Astrophysics, and Cosmology (NUPAC) Seminars: Correlations in Supersymmetric Cascade Decays
(Room 190, Physics & Astronomy, from
Jan 29, 2008 07:00 AM to
Apr 25, 2008 11:30 AM)
-
Tuesday, March 25, 2-3:30pm; Presenter: Terry Goldman (LANL); Room 190, Physics & Astronomy.
Nuclear physics has been built on the fact that nuclei are well described as bound states of nucleons that are almost identical to the free proton and neutron. However, these baryons are known to be composites of quarks with extremely strong Quantum ChromoDynamic (QCD) interactions. Why are the nucleons in nuclei not significantly distorted from their free space structure? We show that the two principle features of QCD phenomenology account for this qualitatively and demonstrate it quantitatively by constructing two small
nuclei directly in terms of quarks. Predictions from this model for the "EMC effect" in deep inelastic scattering of leptons on nuclei appear to be accurate. A dibaryon that does not have nuclear characteristics is also predicted, for which there is "almost" evidence. We conclude that the nucleon-nucleon potential and meson-exchange approaches to nuclear physics bear similarities to chemistry before the appreciation of the electronic structure of atoms, and that body-fixed models of nuclear structure in terms of quark exchanges may lead to deeper understanding in a fashion parallel to that whereby chemistry advanced beyond such concepts as electron affinity, electronegativity, etc.
