Cyber Security Research Workshop

Cyber security is a rapidly growing inter-disciplinary research area This workshop will bring together researchers from around the state, including the University of New Mexico, New Mexico Tech, New Mexico State University, and Los Alamos National Laboratory to discuss emerging research challenges and programs in cyber security and to foster inter-institution and inter-disciplinary teaming to develop cyber security research programs in New Mexico.

Who should participate?

Researchers from New Mexico universities, labs, businesses:

  • with active or previous experience in cyber-security, or
  • in related disciplines including operating systems, networking, programming languages, cryptography, visualization, machine learning, statistics, graph theory, modeling & simulation, applied math, and public policy.

Format

This is a one-day workshop. The morning will feature a number of short "lightning" talks on relevant work by participants and their research groups. The afternoon will be divided into discussions designed to brainstorm, form collaborations, and set agendas for a series of specific challenges in cyber security:

  • Intrusion tolerance and resilience; containing, removing, and surviving intrusions,
  • Creating trust (confidentiality, integrity, availability, and privacy) in systems that contain untrusted components,
  • Mining peta-scale network data to detect changes and anomalies and predict consequences.

Travel

Funding available for travel expenses if needed. Please indicate your needs on registration form. If you are interested in carpooling, please indicate your needs on your registration form.

Registration

If you plan to participate, please register here by January 8. Register as soon as possible. If we get a high volume of registrants, we may close the meeting early to keep it manageable.

You may also register as a non-participant if you can't attend. We will use this information to engage interested researchers going forward.

Participants are asked to write a brief paragraph or 1 page document on one or more of topics relevant to the discussion prior to the meeting. We will invite people to do lightning talks on one or more topics based on these submissions. You may submit it with your registration or send it later to the program organizers. Topics include

  • your research interests, and how they might be relevant to issues in cyber-security
  • problems in cyber-security
  • research priorities in cyber-security
  • funding opportunities

We also welcome links to information about you, other initiatives, efforts to define goals in cyber-security, calls for proposal or any other relevant information.

These documents and information will be posted on a private web page. As soon as you register, you will receive access to the web page.
