Astrophysics and Cosmology
The Los Alamos National Laboratory Institute for Advanced Studies targets leading-edge research in the areas of astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics, and their many points of intersection.
The continuing and rapid development of these fields has led not only to major discoveries, but also to unveiling some of the biggest mysteries in all of physical science. New Mexico institutions have a long history and significant presence in several observational arenas such as optical and radio astronomy, high energy astrophysics, satellite observations, and accelerator and non-accelerator based fundamental physics. This is in turn bolstered by the existence of strong theory programs and world-class computational facilities. The Consortium aims to enhance and strengthen current programs, and to develop and nurture new research, education, and infrastructural initiatives statewide, as well as via national and international partnerships.
