Climate Change Research Training Group
In support of a New Mexico Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) project, the IAS is funding the development of a Climate Change Research Training Group (RTG). The RTG is a significant collaboration among the IAS institutions. The objectives are a) to promote transdisciplinary linkages across climatology, hydrology, and the socioeconomic sciences; b) to create a cadre of scientists that are well-versed in modeling tools and the underlying frameworks used in the three scientific domains; and c) to engage M.S. and Ph.D. students and faculty from all degree granting institutions in the state as well as the national laboratories.
At least two courses will serve as the initial base for the RTG. First, a Climate Change Graduate Seminar Course will be hosted at the IAS and broadcast to the New Mexico universities. The course will include EPSCoR scientists and recognized experts from within and outside the state. Second, a five-week Graduate Summer School in Regional Climate Modeling will be developed and offered in 2009. The innovative school will bring up to 10 Ph.D. students from New Mexico universities to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for an intensive study of regional climate modeling. The emphasis will be on how to connect various modeling approaches in a physically realistic and computationally tractable manner.
