New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute Symposium

The New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute at New Mexico State University (NMSU) holds their technical research symposium annually. The symposium attracts about 200 water experts from around the state to discuss their latest research and technological developments relevant to water resources. Brief presentations are made and posters displayed at the one-day event in late summer. The symposium, held since 2002, brings together researchers from academia, the national laboratories, state and federal agencies, private firms, and students from throughout the Southwest.

This year, the symposium had a total of 127 registrants. There were 35 posters presented (26 by students) and 27 oral presentations (nine by students). In addition to the poster and oral presentation students, we had nine other student attendees, for a total of 44 students. Most attendees were from NM but we had one from CO, one from AZ, eight from TX, and one from South Carolina.

University attendees came from NMSU, New Mexico Tech, the University of New Mexico (UNM), Highlands University, and Northern New Mexico College. State agencies included the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission. Federal agencies such as the U.S. Geological Survey were represented. State lab representation included Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). City registrants included Farmington and Las Cruces. Several private entities attended such as DB Stephens and Associates, John Shomaker and Associates, Livingston Associates, and INTERA.

The talks presented ranged from geochemistry to surface water and ground water recharge issues and to policy development and analysis. Of particular interest were several presentations of innovative methods of data analysis that provided a fresh look at geomorphic and hydrologic situations that are common in New Mexico and many areas of the arid southwest.
