Summer School on High Performance Computing Networks and Clusters
The Information Science and Technology Institutes (ISTI) and the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) jointly fund this recruiting activity. During the eight-week Institute, employed students receive technical training/lectures, professional development seminars, and laboratory experience with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) staff and external mentors. A hands-on computer system laboratory/ machine room is provided, fully stocked with unassembled computer nodes, networking equipment, and assorted equipment, cables, and supplies. Practical skill development in setting up, configuring, administering, testing, monitoring, and scheduling computer systems, supercomputer clusters, and computer networks is emphasized. In addition, technical breadth is developed via exposure to a variety of key topics, technologies, and problems of interest through participation in tutorials, seminars, and facility tours prepared by the faculty coordinators and LANL mentors, computer professionals, and scientists. Within the Institute, students work in small project teams and present their work in a technical forum.
The summer school serves to bring in prospective entry level Computer/Cluster/Network Systems managers to fill the laboratory needs in this area. The hope is that a few top students will be chosen from this program to intern at the Lab in systems/network management positions in Lab organizations such as High Performance Computing; Computing, Communications, and Networking; and others.
This highly-selective program is designed for 12 third year (i.e., Junior) undergraduate students from New Mexico (IAS) schools, although in some cases, Senior year applicants may be considered. Attempts are made to identify high quality students from diverse backgrounds. Students should have sufficient academic achievement to make them eligible graduate school candidates upon completion of their undergraduate program. Computer Science (CS) and Electrical Engineering/Chemical Engineering (EE/CE) students from the University of New Mexico (UNM), New Mexico State University (NMSU), and New Mexico Tech are encouraged to apply. This program is limited to US citizens.
This year, 2008, is the second year for the Summer Computer/Cluster/Network Summer Institute. The program has been extremely successful. All nine students in 2007 were offered systems/network management follow on internships or jobs with the Lab. Of the nine students who just finished the 2008 summer school in August, two have already been offered follow on internships with the Lab, with more to follow in the spring. The students have all enjoyed the class very much as have the mentors. Much of this is due to the outstanding UNM Faculty member Andree Jacobson, who is the instructor for the summer institute.
Please see the summer school website for complete details.
