Mentors for LANL Summer Energy Workshop
The OpenModel project will have 3-5 paid positions for faculty mentors for a summer program in Global Energy Modeling. The program will invite leaders in the field to speak and participate in the program for 1-5 days. 20-30 students as well as interested scientists will participate in talks that take up about half of the time and projects that take up the other half of the time.

The OpenModel project is an a open-source repository of data for modeling global energy systems. The project, led by Rajan Gupta of LANL, collects, collates and organizes information on existing energy infrastructure and resources. The integrated data set can be analyzed with software tools like Google, Google Earth and Wikipedia or by privately developed tools. The goal is to use Open Models to understand the current energy systems on a global level. The project has very broad application can be integrated with research programs in Planetary and Earth Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Business, Systems Analysis, Mathematics, Computer Science and other areas. A strong application will be a proposal for the integration of this project with the applicant's discipline and research interests. Specifically, the faculty member should have a project suitable for a team of 4 to 6 graduate level students to complete in 4 weeks working intensely for 50% of their time.
The student projects may include formatting, documenting data sets for the site and automation of the same; developing the data structures to support the analysis tools; developing analysis tools and connections to analysis tools, modeling of energy systems. The position is open to all university faculty, staff and PhD students, but preference is given to faculty from New Mexico Universities.
The position will require travel to Los Alamos for two pre-summer school meeting, participation via e-mail and conference calls in planning and student selection and full participation in the 4 week summer program. The mentors will be paid $15K plus travel and housing expenses.
Please apply through the IAS Application. The supporting documentation should include:
1) a project that integrates the applicant;s research program with the development and/or application of the Open Model data set.
2) a description of the applicant's qualifications and interests and how they relate to the Open Model program and the objectives of the research program.
Applications will be accepted through February 15th.
